Helmets rock! Climing helmets are a good idea for rock climbing, ice climbing and mountaineering. Don't get a head injury, maimed or killed by some falling rock, gear or scat. Helmets are a good cheap investment in being here to go climbing tomorrow. Helmets protect you from serious injury to a much better degree than nothing. Plus I don't know where you climb but most of the good spots I know don't have a hospital anywhere nearby. It is easy to get hit by falling rocks, gear, glass, scat bags (what a horrible way to go and a bad read in the obits) freeclimbers, really anything. Long before "climbing helmets" we would wear hard hats (which sucked as they fell off your hear when you looked up) however perhaps the best $5 I ever spent was at a yard sale on a hardhat "safety helmet". Story below if you need a reason besides keeping your head in one piece.

One warm sunny day in the late winter we were climbing at Tilbury Knob in West Nanticoke, PA under a big rack of icicles Being such a warm sunny day we joked about the big rack of ice falling on us and laughed...hours later as we even commented on it's one side getting lower and lower throughout the day we come to realize that our exploration of routes has put us right underneath the rack. We came to notice this while we have 2 guys up and two down belaying and one waiting to go up when ice cubes start bouncing down and realizing that we had failed to heed our our own dark humor watched the ice let loose and explode against the upper rock showering us with ice cube sized chunks. That out of the way, a little while later I hear a loud plastic sound and feel my "helmet" move and a  sandwich sized rock  lands on the ground, yup a good use of 5 bucks! My buddy once took a fist sized rock to the shoulder and it almost dropped him so the point is YOU can get hit by falling stuff like biners or pro or glass who knows. Now helmets don't do much if your buddy  is a driller/bolter or piton banger and knocks a good sized chunk of the face off however that's why you do good deeds year round and hold doors for elderly. Helmets are good if gravity finds you or finds you in between something falling and the center of the earth. I liked to tie a string to the back of my helmet or hard hat if it fell off it would catch and not damage my trusty belayer below.
